Working as a researcher at the Academy of Athens, Mrs. Kyriaki Chryssou Karatza has been visiting Aegina ever since she was a teenager, yet she is still enchanted by the natural beauty, history, and culture of our island. Being a folklore expert and having a deep knowledge of Aegina’s cultural history, she has researched the remarkable Lidinos custom in Aegina and tries to contribute to its revival and the local community.

My name is Kyriaki Chrysou Karatza, I live in Athens, and I am a researcher at the Hellenic Folklore Research Centre of the Academy of Athens. My relationship with Aegina started many years ago, when I was still a student, and I used to visit it as an excursion destination.

Then, I chose Aegina as a place of serenity and creative energy…

When we started a family with my husband, we decided to build an island home there. Aegina indeed is a destination close to Athens, offering the ability for frequent travels. What is more, the island landscape with a strong local identity, brings out emotions such as calmness, serenity, relaxation, and creative energy.

What enchanted me the most in Aegina…

is the fact that even from the ship, Aegina invites you to explore it. As you get closer and closer to the port, and everything becomes more visible, you are enchanted both by the alternation of natural beauty and man-made creations. Aegina has the peculiarity of being half green and half dry, thus presenting great diversity. The visitor can literally watch the whole history of the island through its historical monuments and architecture.

Our favorite places to hang out…

…is the port, that exudes the island’s history and grandeur, which dates back to antiquity, with the presence of Kolona, until the recent years. The social and economic element of modern Greece, even from its early phase, is also strong, since Aegina was the first capital of the Greek state. At a very short distance from the port lies Perdika, the classic fishing village of the island, reminiscent of Cycladic style. This variety of images is very impressive and this is what attracts you and does not let you get bored.

What I like to do in Aegina…

is to walk in its small alleys and imagine people, a few decades earlier, sitting on the built-in headboards and simply communicating the issues of their lives.

To me, Aegina means…

Peace. And I love it because it brings out the best in me.

In my opinion, weloveaegina.com is a very praiseworthy effort, that can dynamically highlight the potential of Aegina, both in terms of culture and tourism.
