When the painter Nikos Nikolaou settled in Aegina in 1964, his house turned into a gathering place for the intelligentsia of his generation. Today, his nephew, architect Theodore Zoumboulakis, reopens the doors of this timeless residence to visitors, redefining the concept of hospitality in Aegina.

The renovation transformed the personal space and the studio of Nikos Nikolaou into Nikolaou Residence, with absolute respect for the history of the painter and his wife Angela, keeping alive the warm atmosphere of hospitality and the style of the artist.

In the area of Plakakia, in a wonderful home of artistic aura, timeless elegance and minimal luxury full of finesse, Nikolaou Residence could not be like any other accommodation in Aegina. What makes it special is the sense of the artist, who lived, created and hosted in his house a whole group of intellectuals from 1964 onwards. The artistic feeling that floods the space comes to life through the works and objects that have been placed in their original position, impressively regenerating the atmosphere of the time of N. Nikolaou.

Choose among the five exclusive suites of N. Nikolaou Residence, Rodi, Elia, Fistiki, Levanta, Luisa and the brand new Daphne. The rooms are characterized by the personal style of N. Nikolaou, as many original furniture and works of the painter have been utilized mixed with modern objects. Some suites are able to connect with each other to form a 2-bedroom apartment for enlarged family visits.

Nikolaou Residence is ideally located in the area of Plakakia, a 10-minute walk from the town of Aegina. Pistachio trees, fig trees, olive trees and rosemary surround the main residence and the individual buildings with colors and aromas.

Guests have the opportunity to admire all the common areas and enjoy the enchanting sunset of Aegina from the stone benches, where the intellectuals of Aegina, Nikolaou, Moralis, Kapralos, Elytis, and others used to meet every afternoon.

Nikolaou Museum in Aegina

The Nikolaou Museum, exhibiting works and personal belongings of the famous painter Nikos Nikolaou has opened its gates in Aegina by the heirs of Angela Nikolaou Zoumboulaki.

Starting from the front room—originally the painter’s first studio and later his sitting room—and based on the photographic records and the family’s memories, the idea was to restore the various objects and artworks in their original place and thus reconstruct the atmosphere in which N. Nikolaou lived. The art collection belongs to the family of Angela Nikolaou, Theodore, Christina, Daphne and Philippos Zoumboulakis.

The atelier of the painter N. Nikolaou is open for visits every Saturday 18:30-19:30 during summer months.
