The route of the artists of Aegina

 

Aegina Town offers a coastal route, easily walkable from the port! This is the famous route of the artists of Aegina. Let’s follow it to discover one by one the works of art of Aegina, from the ancient years until now, and many more beauties, with the sweet company of the sea and the open horizon.

From the port, we stop to photograph the Gate of Aegina, the work of the famous sculptor, Kostas Varotsos.

Next stop at the parking lot of Aegina port to admire the mural-artwork “Treasure of Aegina”, created by the artist Leonidas Giannakopoulos.

After leaving the port, turn left and go uphill towards ancient Kolona. The artists’ route continues following the coastal road of Nikos Kazantzakis. There we see the sculpture “Untitled” by the famous artist Yannis Moralis.

Behind the sculpture, we find the museum of Nikos Nikolaou in the painter’s atelier itself, housed in his former residence which now functions as a boutique hotel. It is open to the public every Wednesday and Saturday from 18:30-20:30.

We continue our route with the romantic Lighthouse of Bouzas, which was recently declared a monument of modern Greek history.

The next stop is the Sculpture of the Mother (Mana) by the painter and sculptor Christos Kapralos. Don’t forget to visit the Kapralos museum opposite Mana.

Our last stop is the house where the great Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis once lived. He loved Aegina and its light so much. It is not open to the public, but we can admire it from the outside!

Bonus tip: Follow the route at sunset time! The route is 3 km one-way!
