Mount Ellanio, the highest mountain of Aegina
Mount Ellanio, the highest mountain of Aegina
The highest mountain is Mt. Ellanio (or simply Oros, which is the Greek word for mountain) with a peak at 532 m. Once atop, whether by car or on foot via the specially carved hiking trails, one thing is certain: the view ahead and around you seems infinite. When you climb up, whether you arrive by car or on foot via the specially marked walking paths, one thing is certain: the view in front of you and around you is unlimited. At its top was the altar of Hellenic Zeus, which is believed to have been built by the mythical hero Aeakos. At the place of the altar there is today the small church of Prophet Ilias-Analipsi.
At the foot of the mountain to the north is today the temple of Taxiarchs (13th century). On the side of the impressive stepped road that leads to the small church, a 5m high parapet wall built with polygonal masonry from the Hellenistic era is preserved. Where the church is built are the ruins of a building 20m wide and 29m long, whose roof was supported by 3 rows of 5 columns. It is possible that the hypostyle hall was a guest house (festival house). A little higher there is a large outdoor traditional tank (Souvala). In a second souvala a little higher, a hydria was found with an inscription dedicated to Hellenic Zeus.
You can see all of Aegina from above, the opposite islands, and even Piraeus. Some choose dawn and others sunset to complete the experience with a sky that changes color gradients. Find your own best moment, take whoever else you want with you and upload your own selfie on top of the Mount that was once honored by Zeus.
