The Gate of Aegina is an artwork made by the famous Greek sculptor, Kostas Varotsos, that welcomes visitors to the port of Aegina. It stands at a strategic point in the port since December 2009. According to the artist who created the sculpture, it is a symbolic welcome or farewell to the visitor.

During the day, the play with the light of Aegina and the new images it creates when you look through it, pleasantly surprise the visitor! During the night, the sculpture gives the landscape its characteristic presence, with the figures and shadows behind it inspiring many photo clicks.

In his interview at We Love Aegina, Kostas Varotsos explained that when he was asked to create an artwork for Aegina, the first thing that came to his mind was a door.

“Every time I come to Aegina, it feels like opening a door and entering another dimension, entering paradise. When I arrive here, I leave everything behind, and I am different. This feeling that the island causes you just an hour after you leave Athens behind is magical. It feels like opening a door, entering, and suddenly appearing somewhere else. This is exactly what my work on the port depicts.”
